ISLAMABAD: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup & Gilani Pakistan, 1 in 2 married Pakistani women, who do not call their husband by his name, address him in relation to their children.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked, “Do you know of anyone around you who does not address her husband by his first name?” In response to this question, 60% said yes and 38% said no. 2% did not wish to respond.
Question: “Do you know of anyone around you who does not address her husband by his first name?”
Those who answered in the affirmative were further asked, “How do they address him instead?” 48% said they address him by referring to him as ‘father of so-and-so’, 21% said they called him by his profession (e.g Doctor Sahaab/Vakil Sahaab etc), 12% said they called out to him by saying ‘Hey you’ or ‘Are you listening’, 9% said they referred to the husband by some nickname and 10% said they addressed him by some other term of endearment.
