MUZAFFARGARH: The Muzaffargarh police have registered a case against 16 persons for allegedly issuing an order to murder a couple for marrying of their own free will.   

Shumaila, a resident of Sher Sultan in Muzaffargarh, married her cousin Kora Khan, in defiance of her family, which wanted her to marry a person three times older than her age.

According to Shumaila, who lodged a complaint with the police, she had been engaged Khan in her childhood, but her family later rescinded the engagement and wanted her to marry the old man, stated to be an opulent and an influential.

The punchayet, which was held at the house of Mukhtiar Ahmedand attended by around 16 persons, had declared the couple liable to be murdered as they have disgraced the honour of the family.

The police have registered a case against Mukhtiar Ahmad, Muhiuddin, Azam, Illahi Bukhsh, Hayat, Zulfiqar, Amir, Aslam and others under 355, 506,117 acts of Pakistan Penal Code.

District Police Officer (DPO) Awais Ahmad said that the police have formed a committee to probe the issue. He said that stern action will be taken against if the punchayat had issued the decree against the couple.
