ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that he was punished for putting the country on the path of rapid development.
While chairing the meeting of PML(N)’s parliamentary at Punjab House on Saturday he said “I thank Almighty Allah that I was not disqualified on the charges of corruption but I was out because I did not draw salary from his son's company”.
Nawaz Sharif said that he wasn't expecting this decision after what he had done for Pakistan. "It was insulting for an elected representative of 200 million people. I was ousted after I refused to step down." “Why should I have declared the salary which I had not received from my own son's company. It was not some government's job or position. It was my son company,” he argued.
He dismissed the propaganda that Panama case verdict would weaken the ruling party. “The presence of PML-N’s members in large numbers is a fitting response to the opposition’s propaganda,” he said, adding that PML-N was stronger than before. “Your leader is not weak. We have accepted the verdict despite reservations." The former prime minister said that you PML-N's members should be proud that corruption was not the reason for his disqualification. Sharif said that he was punished for putting the country on the path of rapid development. But he said that there should be across-the-board accountability.
He recalled that one day he was the country's prime minister and the next day, he was made a hijacker. "Unfortunately, it has been our history. Former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was hanged to death. I too was told that I would be sentenced to death," he said.
The former premier said that rule of law was the only way forward for Pakistan. "I had made Pakistani invincible by allowing nuclear tests as Prime Minister and had a rejected an offer of USD 5billion made by the then US President Bill Clinton. He lamented that no Pakistani prime minister was allowed to complete his constitutional term. "I am mentally ready to give any sacrifice as I only think about Pakistan," he added.
He said that he had no desire to become Prime Minister now. "Shehbaz Sharif knows that I had no desire to become the prime minister, I was compelled to do so."
He also took a dig at PTI Chairman Imran Khan, saying that some immature politicians were creating problems for the country as well as form themselves.
While telling about the Capital FZE in Dubai and UAE Iqama, he said, "I had to take new visa from Dubai and go back to London. Our centre of politics has remained in London. For the issuance of visa, my son opened the company Capital FZE. He appointed me as Chairman of Board of Directors with a salary of 10,000 dirhams, estimated as 1,50,000 rupees."
Nawaz Sharif asked his party leaders to support Shehbaz Sharif after him. He announced that the Punjab CM will take charge as PM while Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will remain as interim premier for 45 days. There was no burden on my shoulders to give resignation as I was clean, I am an ideological person, he said while claiming that he wasn’t so twenty years ago.
