NEW DELHI: An Indian judge on Monday handed a 10-year jail sentence to Guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, whose followers went on a deadly rampage after he was convicted of rape on Friday.

According to media reports, the sentence was pronounced amid intense security at a prison in the northern town of Rohtak where the Guru has been held since his conviction, but there have been no reports of violence since the sentencing.

Supporters of Singh's cult resorted to violent protests last week, which killed at least 38 and injured more than 200 in Haryana, after a local court found him guilty of raping two women in a case dating back to 2002. Ten of thousands of police enforced a lockdown in large parts of the northern states of Haryana and Punjab where Singh has a mass following.
