Sheikh Rashid moves SC for granting right to vote to overseas Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD (Online): Former interior minister Sheikh Rashid has filed petition in Supreme Court (SC) for granting right to vote to overseas Pakistanis.

He has taken the plea in the petition that Overseas Pakistanis are valuable asset of Pakistan. Depriving them of right to vote is against the constitution. Overseas Pakistanis remit over 33 billion dollars to Pakistan.

The number of overseas Pakistanis is more than 9 million.

He pleaded the former government took steps to grant right to vote to overseas Pakistanis. The incumbent government is depriving them of their fundamental right.

He prayed to the court to declare unconstitutional the amendment made in clause 94 of election act besides issuing orders to government to take steps for granting right to vote to overseas Pakistanis.

The federal government, law ministry and election commission have been made respondents in the petition.
