SC orders KP government to evolve criterion for appointment of principal


Islamabad, April 05 (Online): Supreme Court (SC) has ordered KP government to evolve criterion for appointment of principal of Edward Medical college Peshawar.
The court issued these orders during the course of hearing of case pertaining to status of Edward College Peshawar and appointment of principal.

The case came up for hearing before a 3-member bench of SC presided over by Justice Mushir Alam here Monday.

During the course of hearing the counsel for the petitioner argued “ government says we want to run it according to government college. The board was set up since 1974 and a Christian has always remained principal. We want the character of this college should remain Christian. Bishop nominates the principal since last 47 years.

Advocate general KP took the plea KP government has filed all details in writing. Edward college was nationalized since 1974 and governor KP is board of governor.

Justice Qazi Amin remarked “Pakistan is for all the citizens who are living therein. All the citizens of Pakistan are asset of the country irrespective of their religion. What is problem of the government if a Pakistani Christian is part of administration. Bishop should nominate five names for the post of principal. Government will finalize the name as per merit. You have to show more broadmindedness.

Justice Qazi Amin remarked “ Hamid Khan sahb, there are big philosophers in Christian. You should bring one among them. This is not the problem of the court or the government and it is rather issue of students of KP. Government should evolve criterion for the appointment of principal and Bishop will provide name. All the control will lie with college.
The court directed Lahore Diocesan Trust Association to provide list of 5 persons on merit to government for appointment of principal.

The court also ordered KP government to make consultations with college board and appoint the principal as per merit and wrapped up the matter.
