PAC decides to call chairman NAB through summons


ISLAMABAD, May 05 (Online): Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has decided to call chairman NAB Justice (Retd) Javed Iqbal through summons as he has once again failed to appear before it.

Committee members said that Chairman NAB is persistently ignoring the committee which is not acceptable and he will have to appear before the PAC at every cost.

PAC met here under its chairman Rana Tanvir Hussain in parliament house on Wednesday.

The committee members expressed annoyance over non appearance of chairman NAB in the committee meeting on Wednesday.

Committee member Rohail Asghar said if chairman NAB does not attend the committee meeting then committee has limitless powers and it should exercise these powers. It will be a matter of shame for Chairman NAB if these powers are used and he will participate in the meeting.

All the members of committee said that an in-camera meeting of the committee be held and a clear decision be taken therein that what strategy has to be adopted if chairman NAB does not come in the meeting.

PAC expressed displeasure over corruption cases in Utility Stores Corporation (USC) and directed the administration that the process of providing sugar to people by making their queues be abolished. This is their degradation.

The committee also directed that the pre-condition of purchasing other commodities with sugar be withdrawn.

Audit authorities while briefing the committee told that USC has become hub of corruption. Corruption cases of Rs 150 million stand against different stores.

MD USC Umar Lodhi told the committee that 6 employees are involved in corruption. Case is running in FIA. One suspect is absconding against whom corruption case of Rs 2.3 million stands. FIA is conducting inquiry of 96 corruption cases in respect of USC.

Chairman Committee expressed annoyance over FIA and NAB over their slackness in holding inquiries saying that FIA continues to run after sugar the whole day long and it does not do its respective job. We will call a special meeting on the matters related to USC.

He underlined that corruption charges are leveled only on politicians but no one takes notice of financial losses in government departments.

Committee directed USC authorities to that condition of purchasing additional commodities with sugar item be revoked and sugar be sold out under rations system.
