ISLAMABAD, June 18 (Online): Opposition leader in National Assembly (NA) Shahbaz Sharif has said there is need to forge consensus on electoral reforms in view of rigging complaints in election 2018.
He said this in a letter written by him to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja here Friday.
He said in his letter the present government is going to make the next election controversial by imposing its electoral reforms agenda through unilateral steps. The electoral reforms of the government run contrary to the constitution. The government has not made any consultations with the concerned parties.
He pointed out that the election commission itself has expressed grave concern over the recent election bills. These election bills were approved in the national assembly by bulldozing them. Besides giving their opinion on meaningful reforms the institutions will have to take responsibility as well to ensure fair, free and transparent elections.
The election commission owes responsibility to make consultations with all political parties on electoral reforms.
It was further said in the letter “ I stress upon you to summon all political parties for consultations so that plan could be framed on the basis of consensus to ensure fair, free and transparent elections so that election could reflect the genuine will of people.
